Story Time:
I have a friend (who shall remain nameless, because if she finds out I am talking about her she is going to rip me a new one). Anyways, she is easily one of the most talented women I have ever met in my life. She has big dreams and the 9 to 5 world wasn’t cutting it, so she puts in her 40 hours (to support her family), and then dives head first into her “Side Hustle”.
Her product is thebomb.com and she dreams of becoming the next Beyoncé of her industry, but she was stuck. Like Great Wall of China I don’t know how to get around this STUCK!
Everything she did for her business was all over the damn place! There was no consistency in her social media, her website barely existed, and the selfie she was using to promote her business was driving me CRAZY (you know professional photographer over here). But the one thing that never ceased to amaze me was her product. At the end of the day she was THE BEST in town hands down.
The problem was not her talent, it was the how the world was perceiving her “Side Hustle.”
I realized that my friend was not the only super talented person who was reducing their gift to a "side hustle" instead of business – not because she didn’t want to slay like Beyoncé, but because she had no idea how to get to the next level. Let’s be real, I looked at my own website and cringed… everything I was coaching her to do I needed to do my damn self! Honestly, helping her helped me, because I too, was a hot mess!
